Kuhn has been a gifted composer since childhood, yet his talent cannot spare him loneliness or a profound spiritual crisis. He is in love with Gertrude, but she loves Heinrich Muoth, a singer whose passionate nature stands in sharp contrast to Kuhn’s reserve. He is thus confronted with the painful divide between the depth of his own feelings and his inability to change another person’s choice.
